Gaussian Splat

A Gaussian Splat is a 3D rendering technique that uses point clouds and Gaussian functions to create smooth, photorealistic surfaces.

A Gaussian Splat is a method for displaying 3D scenes using point clouds, where each point is rendered as a small, smooth blob (splat) based on a Gaussian function. This technique allows for fast, photorealistic rendering of complex environments without traditional mesh geometry.

In Pano2VR, a node with a Gaussian splat model shows real-world spaces or objects captured with 3D scanning or photogrammetry, with smooth transitions and realistic detail. Pano2VR reads splats in PLY, SPLAT, KSPLAT, SPZ, and SOG format. It can turn a splat into an optimized RAD file with levels of detail, which the player loads in pieces, so that even large splats appear quickly.
