This one is for the panorama photography and Vienna fans! We’re based in the beautiful city of Vienna, a place photographed from every angle, especially after a record tourism year in 2025. But you don’t often get to explore it as an equirectangular projection, and interactive 360° viewing doesn’t translate to Instagram.

Wien52: a long-running weekly photo project documenting Vienna.

Manfred Gruber and Wien52

Today’s In the Wild comes from Manfred Gruber, the photographer behind Wien52. Manfred started this project in 2013 with the idea of photographing Vienna once a week for one year. Thirteen years later, he’s still going.

Lucky for us, he also includes panoramas in his gallery, often presented as single scenes with a minimal interface, as Manfred explains:

As I got the impression that people easily get lost when navigating panoramic images online, I try to keep everything smart and simple.

When the task is meant to showcase the beauty of photography, a simple skin is really all a project needs, as Manfred has proven.

Highlighting a historic apothecary

There are so many beautiful panoramas here that it is hard to pick just a few, but one series is especially worth highlighting. The latest addition to Manfred’s collection is set inside a beautiful old apothecary.

This is where panorama photography shines because you can virtually step into a historical landmark like this (founded in 1551). It’s been operating at its current location since the late 19th century! The only things that seem to have changed are the modern products on the shelves and the contemporary point-of-sale.

Manfred was afforded the opportunity to photograph the apothecary’s basement as well. It seems to serve as a museum of old medicine bottles. Choosing to use black and white makes this basement feel old and unnerving at the same time.

Worth a visit

Of course, the website is also full of traditional still photographs depicting quiet slices of everyday life, and landmarks in Vienna. It’s worth a visit; the website and the city.
