External Image align

I'm doing a tour of art gallery where is a lot of popup images. The pictures should appear in screen center. All the pictures have various size ratio. Because of the external loader always anchor the content top left, I have to resize all the images to fixed size, leave the borders transparent and save as png. Png's, compared to more preferable jpg's are about 10x more kB size so they loads with some delay.
Can the External Image loader be improved in future by adding Align Center option?
Or is there some other solution?
