For 27 years, ATTAS (Advanced Technologies Testing Aircraft System), a modified VfW 614 airliner, was operated as a flying research platform by the German Aerospace Center (DLR - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt). A few weeks before it was retired, I had the chance to create several high-resolution panoramas of the aircraft interior and exterior. You can jump in here:

http://www.at-one.aero/pano/attas_cockpit/

I you find the (i) info markers annoying, you can turn them off using the menu available from the bottom left.

Each interior panorama was created in Hugin from 50 individual images made with a 17-55mm lens on a Canon EOS 550D. Three exposure levels of the completed panorama were then blended using exposure fusion with the LR/Enfuse plugin in Lightroom. Coming from Hugin the max resolution would have been a whopping 25000x 12500 px. I ended up using 16384x8192 px as input for Pano2VR. Various experts (pilot/flight engineer/experiment operators/...) provided assistance in labeling the various components/displays/... Apologies to those who don't speak German - the labels are only available in German at this time.

Regardless of the Tooltips (i) I found this spectacular imaging work of the cockpit. Grand Work Effort.

As I am a private pilot I can fully appreciate the work effort in creating this panorama.

It is important to appreciate the photographers on site work effort. It really is the person behind the camera that make his imaging come alive.
I virtually can hear the engines waiting for the tower to authorize take off !!! Beautiful work.

Noticed the simplified digital versus the analog instruments.

Thank you for showing us your work !!!

Hi Dave,

thank you for the kind words. The glass cockpit on the left hand side is actually one of the modifications done by DLR when they aqcuired the aircraft and fitted it with a fly-by-wire system, and the left-hand control column could be replaced with a side-stick. Below the displays there is a switch to transfer control to one of the science stations in the back. The ATTAS could even be flown as a UAV while controlled from a fixed cockpit simulator on the ground, or we could reprogram the flight computer to mimic the behaviour of other aircraft. E.g., the very first flight of an Airbus A380 was actually ATTAS with A380 flight rules. A grand masterpiece of engineering in its time, and now it is part of the science exhibition at the "German Museum" in Munich.

Kind regards,
Alexander

Hi, very nice.
If I was to have any input it would be to say look at the floating tool tip.
This way all the info popup text boxes will be in front of the hotspots.
At the moment you can see some of the hotspots are in front of the text box.

But still good work.

Hi Hopki,

thank you for the pointers, that tooltip occlusion issue was one of the things still bugging me... Simplified the whole skin a bit, as well. I have re-upped the cockpit panorama with the new skin:

http://www.at-one.aero/pano/attas_cockpit/

Works like a charm when viewed using flash. However, using the HTML5 version, under certain circumstances the panorama image suddenly disappears, leaving me with a white image showing only the info hotspots and the tooltip:
  • when the cursor is within the pano area or completely outside the browser window area on loading: pano goes white when the cursor moves over a hotspot WITHOUT first moving the pano, moving the pano via mouse or keyboard before hovering over a hotspot solves this issue
  • when the cursor is outside the pano area on loading but inside the browser window (Firefox 23.0.1, Windows 7 x64): pano goes white when the cursor moves into the pano area or even when the cursor moves over browser areas such as the URL bar, again WITHOUT first moving the pano, moving the pano via keyboard solves this issue
In both cases, the panorama image reappears when I move the pano. Any ideas?

Kind regards,
Alexander
